 What is BTX?

It is a purified protein extract from a bacterium. It relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles. It helps to create a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance. When injected into a muscle:   It temporarily blocks the chemical signals that make the muscle contract. Only tiny quantities of BTX are injected. Only the injected muscle will be affected. Is it safe? BTX has an excellent safety profile. It has been  used in a variety of therapeutic areas for over 30 years, including treatment of squints, facial spasms, migraine, severe sweating, and cerebral palsy, to name but a few.

How does BTX work?

• A tiny amount of BTX is injected into the facial muscles using sterile disposable needles.
• These reduce the signals from the nerve fibres to the facial muscles.
• BTX blocks the nerve impulse from reaching these muscles.
• The muscle then cannot contract as much as usual, and the overlying skin smoothes out.
• This effect generally lasts 3-6 months.

What happens during a BTX treatment?

• It only takes fifteen minutes or so.
• Your Doctor will ask you to frown or smile to assess your muscle movement.
• Then she will determine the injection site to achieve the best results for you.
• BTX  is then administered by several tiny injections.
• The sensation feels like a pin prick.
• No anaesthetic is required.
• You can return to work or day to day activities immediately.

Are there any side effects from a BTX treatment?

If they do occur, they are generally mild and temporary. Your doctor will go through all of these prior to your treatment:

• Temporary mild swelling at the site of the injections, stinging
• Slight bruising from the injection
• Rarely, temporary drooping of the eyelid

When will BTX start to work?

From Day 2 in some patients through to 14 days to see the full effect.

How long will my BTX treatment last?

• Results can last from 3 to 4 months following initial treatment.
• Subsequent BTX treatments can last much longer.
